Pacific Islanders, Hawaii’s Hardest Hit by CoVID, Fight Back with Concert 11-21-2020

At one point it hit 40%; deadly odds for peoples already struggling to survive in Hawai‘i: Samoans and Micronesians especially hit by the highest CoVID-19 infection rate in the state. “Yet true to our Pacific cultures,” says one Pasefika leader and President of Pasefika Empowerment and Advancement (PE‘A), Inc. Dr. Halaevalu Vakalahi, “we are great warriors and the epitome of resiliency!” The “ Pasefika Su‘i Fefiloi ” concert will feature Hawai‘i’s top, award-winning musicians and favorite artists: Josh Tatofi , Kapena , Rebel SoulJahz , RIMJOL , John Akapo , Kelandy , and comedians Da Braddahs . And the fact that all are Pacific Islanders helps to leverage Pacific cultural assets and strengths to fight CoVID-19.

“We’re raising awareness and promoting prevention,” said Felea‘i Tau, leader of the Pacific Islander Hawai‘i CoVID-19 Response Team. “We need to communicate life-saving messages in a way that our people may receive it and own it, through speech, poetry, song, dance and lots of humor!”

The concert is jam-packed with PSAs in Pacific Islander languages, as well as videos from Pacific Islander leaders, healthcare experts and doctors. Department of Health and Honolulu City & County will also partner via two newly-hired Pacific Islander leaders. Add the universal languages of the Pacific in song and dance ala fire-dancing and Tiktok, plus Nā Hoku award-winning Tongan, Josh Tatofi, to encourage people to “Stop Spread & Save Lives”! CHEEHOO! It’s a fun warrior call to celebrate life and protect each other.

Sponsored by PE‘A, Inc. and the Pacific Islander Hawai‘i CoVID-19 Response Team in partnership with AlohaCare, Papa Ola Lōkahi, Department of Health, American Samoa Office in Hawai‘i, Consulate of the Marshall Islands in Honolulu, Marshallese Community Organization of Hawai‘i, and the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Hawai‘i CoVID-19 Response, Resilience, and Recovery Team.
